ADIDAS X EXTRA BUTTER “CITY OF GOD” CONSORTIUM CUP SAMBAS
First presented during the Consortium Cup design tournament in 2023, the Extra Butter x Adidas Samba was concept-ed as our first round entry, which called for designing within the “classics” footwear category. Following the creative narrative of “Love for International Films” which we carried as an overarching theme across every round, this Samba calls inspiration from the 2002 Brazilian cult classic, City of God.
The art direction and fabrication display the dichotomy of Rio de Janeiro's picturesque beaches versus the beaten and battered nature of la favelas, or Brazilian ghettos. The vibrant teal, haze green and banana yellow colors are contrasted by the vintage washed upper, hairy suede, cracked leather and repair zig zag stitched striping.
To accompany the release of the City of God Sambas, I designed a soccer jersey and graphic tshirt inspired by the film. The tee features the iconic image of Little Ze and the Jersey features a moment of tenderness and love in an otherwise gritty and dark film.
ADIDAS X EXTRA BUTTER “BATTLE ROYALE” RIVALRY LOW
Taking inspiration from the 2000 Japanese cult classic, Battle Royale, the art direction for this Rivalry calls for a color palette taken directly from the film’s school uniform.
Classic tones of khaki, antique white and creme are materialized through premium full grain leather overlays, cracked leather accent panels and perforated suede base. The focal element of broken stitch lines and frayed threading on the 3-stripes acts as a symbol for the chaos and destructive plot of the film, proving a life of luxury doesn’t come without a beautiful struggle.
